TOILETOWA wins Japan Kukan Design Award Bronze and Sustainable Prize

TOILETOWA -

Among approximately 800 entries in Japan’s largest space design award, the Japan Kukan Design Award, our firm’s design of the fully circular bio-toilet TOILETOWA received the Bronze Award in the Public Facilities and Community Space category, as well as the Sustainable Space Prize.

The owner, Ishizaka Sangyo Co., Ltd., producer and director Yuka Saito of JIEN LLP, and the construction firm Terashima Construction.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Takeshi Saito, the plasterer who worked on the rammed earth walls, plaster finishes, and *sanwa-do* flooring, as well as to everyone who has supported us.

■ Returning to the Earth: Towards a Design Philosophy

Among the awarded works, there were very few, apart from ours, that centered on the theme of “earth” or “returning to the earth.” This experience has reinforced our belief that it is essential to further promote the concept of “earth” within the realm of design, especially in the context of sustainability.

Currently, the facility is limited to employees only and is not yet open to the public. However, it is mentioned that visitors participating in factory tours at Ishizaka Sangyo in Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture, will receive guidance regarding it. In the future, we would like to consider organizing a tour in collaboration with the Japan Space Design Association.

We will provide information when it becomes open to the public. Thank you for your continued support. https://www.tonomirai.com/portfolio/toiletowa/
